Welcome to the Hawaii Quilt Guild!

Hawaii Quilt Guild Show 2009

President's Welcome

MaryAnn Bufalini, HQG Aloha! It is a privilege for me to be writing to you as the new president of the Hawaii Quilt Guild. Thank you sincerely for your vote of confidence. I take that seriously. I have enjoyed many years as a guild member, watched so many others before me accomplish wonderful things and build a large, strong guild. The good examples of effective leadership I was able to serve under made it the time to step up and serve.

I came to be a quilter through sewing. Growing up in NY, sewing all sorts of doll clothes! My parents bought me my first sewing machine, a shock because I didn’t even recognize what it was! I have since sewn many miniskirts, lots of clothing, and outfits for my three children, taught English smocking and continue to love teaching. Once I quilted, I was hooked!

I graduated Fordham University, and came to Hawaii that year, cherishing the warmth. I was an IBM Systems Engineer for 18 years, taught for the DOE and now am with Sacred Hearts Academy. I raised three children here and continue to teach, quilt and enjoy the company of many talented quilters.

Our membership is the largest ever. If I step back and look, we are an amazing group of talented artists…some traditionalists, some Hawaiian quilters, some contemporary…all brimming with endless ideas we strive to express with fabric. Our artistic hearts and minds bring out the best in us and as we see each month, the best of the quilt art world. Some of our members are featured in art shows, some are “published”, and many are worthy. I believe many still do not see themselves that way. If you were to visit our Hawaii Quilt Guild annual show as a visitor, I believe you would be so much more impressed than you feel, working at your dining room table! Let’s start this year with the understanding that the work we do and the art we create, bring so much value, so much joy and shows so much caring, that we have the right to applaud ourselves as talented artists…are you thinking of yourself that way?!

Make it a point to enjoy the monthly meetings. Longtime members are valued for the expertise and understanding they bring to the table. New members are especially valued for the creative ideas they have not yet shared…Please plan to join us. We thrive on our member’s input!

Aloha
MaryAnn Bufalini

New to the Islands or planning a trip? Have we got a tool for you!
We’ve have bunches of requests from quilters for a list of various quilting-related resources and have started compiling one that we hope will be useful for both local and visiting quilters! This is definitely a work in progress, so if you know of any others, please contact our webmaster! (Note: This resource listing does not include web-based businesses.) Click here to access the Quilt Hawaii Resource List.
